Low Key
@LowKeyuhtn
Restylish: 1.What does it take to get to the top of the tree?
LowKey: Patience, perseverance, faith in the unknown and experience. No matter what you see, read or hear….overnight success’ do not exist. A foundation needs to be established. Some folks think because I have a website and that I work from home this came easy. Not knowing I’ve been laid off, failed and every negative thing in between when talking about my career. But it’s the choice I made and I have an EXTREME amount of confidence in my craft and brand that I will shortly be at the top of “That Tree”
Restylish: 2.What inspires you?
LowKey: My Dad. plain and simple. No man on the face of this earth works harder than Raymond Taylor Ivey. I don’t care what anyone tells me. He’s damn near deaf out his right ear and almost blind out his left eye, but yet and still finds a way to work and get the job done. There’s NO ONE that can inspire me more than him. Not Jay-Z, Will Smith, Oprah, or whoever. And that’s no disrespect to their legacies, but I can only be inspired by what I’ve seen firsthand. Through the good, the bad and the ugly…Raymond Ivey is my TRUE inspiration!
Restylish: 3.“How did you start?
Lowkey: I started in my in 2006 after I graduated Howard University in Washington, D.C. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism. I hosted a radio show for 3 years on the college radio station and during my last year I received the On Air Personality of the Year Award for all Black Colleges. I could have SWORN after receiving that award I would’ve landed a radio job but, that never happened. And it did something to my confidence. So, I had to move back home and start over. I started working at a hotel in my town to pay the bills because my parents weren’t having that stay at home and not doing thing shit lol. I then started YouHeardThatNew.com. Worked a bevy of different jobs while doing the site and in 2008 got a call from BET.com to become their Music/News producer. Great experience and I definitely learned a lot. What worried me is, I didn’t know how to formally write news articles because I went to school for Broadcast Journalism and not Journalism. I was nervous as fuck, but I learned along the way and it turned out fine. I got laid off in 2010 and then signed with Complex Media Network. Since then, I’ve been doing UHTN full time as well as hosting concerts, release events and parties.
Restylish: 4.Love is?
LowKey: Love is BEAUTIFUL. But maintaining it is the task. It also depends on who you are and where you are in life. When you see the word love, you feel great. You remember all those moments you were loved and loved someone or something back, but then you also remember the process it took to get there. The fighting, the crying, the sacrificing, the arguing, the confusion. You remember it all. But if it’s worth it for you and yours? Then it’s a beautiful thing. We’ve all loved the wrong ones for the wrong reasons, but it’s what makes us stronger as people. It’s lessons on lessons on lessons. I love love. I can’t WAIT to find that one love and shower her with it. It’ll be a process but I’m sure when it presents itself I’ll be able to handle the tedious efforts.
Restylish: 5.Can you multitask?
LowKey: I can multitask. I can always do better, but I feel like I’m pretty damn good at it. I’m currently answering these interview questions, thinking about the party I have to host tonight, figuring out my outfit, talking on BBM and praying to the football gods that the Giants win. I’m also updating the website as well. My life IS multitasking. Fuck that, LIFE is multitasking
Restylish: 6.Have you ever lied in an interview?
LowKey: No. I expose myself on Twitter and in my writing to lie in any interview.
Restylish: 7.What’s your favorite thing to do in morning?
LowKey: Text “her” good morning. But I don’t have a “her” to text so I doing push ups has replaced it. Oh and cooking breakfast. I’m greedy.
Restylish: 8.What is your next short term goal and Long term goal?
LowKey: My next short term goal is to be booked for at LEAST three hosting gigs a week. I need that. I want that. Hosting has made me hungry again. I love doing it. Concerts, release events, parties. Whatever. I love connecting with the people. I love having fun with people. I want folks to come to my events and just enjoy themselves. And I want to be part of that reason they’re enjoying themselves. My next long term goal? To be a media correspondent for a major network. Host or co-host an urban media show.
Restylish: 9. If you were stranded on an island what are the three things that’d you’d take with you?
LowKey: My laptop. A lifetime supply of Apple Juice. My blanket from when I was 6.
Restylish: 10.What’s your favorite thing about women?
LowKey: My favorite thing about women is their affection. It’s just something in a women’s touch that hits a spot. Being held by a female is one of the best feelings in the world. I’m a Mama’s Boy. Moms use to hold me a lot when I was younger and still tries to whenever she gets the chance. It’s almost like a craving….a sense of security. And being held by the RIGHT woman? #FUCKSCHOOL (that means fuck everything). I know men are supposed to be the protectors but when you’re in the arms of a woman, that type of protection is a feeling that is just….man I cant even explain it lol.
Mike Classic
Restylish: What inspires you?
Mike Classic: Life. And all the things I have been thru.
Restylish: What does it take to get to the top of the tree?
Mike Classic: A ladder named success.. Pretty tall ladder lol.
Restylish: Music….?
Mike Classic: Hard work, motivation, energy, humbleness and a positive mind-state. Stay real in your music, don’t do what you think is hot NOW. Do the music that comes from the HEART. Your work ethic has to be amazing, if you slackin’ you will get bullshit results. Hustle hard, plain and simple..
Restylish: Do you have a muse?
Mike Classic: My fans. (I hope I answered this right lol)
Restylish: Do you listen to your own music?
Mike Classic: Surprisingly not as much as the typical artist should I guess. Maybe 2-3 times a week. That’s about it haha..
Restylish: Have you ever lied in an interview?
Mike Classic: Nope, always keep 100% real.
Restylish: What’s your favorite thing to do in morning?
Mike Classic: Fall off the bed, blast music very loud to wake the neighbors up and brush my grill.
Restylish: How do you like to end your day?
Mike Classic: A couple of the finest models from around the world would be dope, but for now, a good meal and a studio session will do for now. Lol.
Restylish: What projects are you working on now/next?
Mike Classic: My debut mix tape “Where Amazing Happens” looking to drop in January of 2012.
Restylish: What is your mind set on when you wake up?
Mike Classic: What the hell is for breakfast!
Restylish: Why are you answering these questions?
Mike Classic: I dig Sara’s movement and website/clothing. And she is mad cool..and cute lol
Restylish: Love or Money?
Mike Classic: Love. Money never last forever… Unless your Oprah… Or that guy Bill Gates…Or Chuck Norris.
Restylish: If you created a new dance craze what would you name it?
Mike Classic: Crank dat Tom Cruise (Tropic Thunder) haha..
Restylish: What drives you to accomplish your goals?
Mike Classic: My family, my friends, and when people hit me up saying some of my songs help them throughout their day or get them thru certain situations. That’s when my drive to accomplish something is at its highest. Knowing your music is hittin’ people’s hearts and they are actually listening…
Jay Houston of Oddz.N.Endz
@Oddznendz
Restylish: 1. What does it take to get to the top of the tree?
Jay Houston: To get to the top, of course you must start from the bottom. Know your roots. Without the branches you will never get there. Use those branches, but don’t rely on them. One branch to the next, but never break a branch.
Restylish: 2. What inspires you?
Jay Houston: Real, pure, unfiltered emotions in a creative outlet. Live music from the acoustic lesbian hipser on open mic night. Art and design I see online that will never get any attention or be lucrative. Things like that.
Restylish: 3. Music is?
Jay Houston: A drug. I rely on it, honestly. It’s an escape from reality. It takes me away from pain, disappointment or hardship and puts me in a different place. On the other side, it could enhance a great feeling like love, happiness, bliss. But it can also, bring you down even more into a worse place. Sometimes that feels good. I know, I’m emo at times. Ha.
Restylish: 4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Jay Houston: Exactly 5 years from today’s date, I will be enjoying the breeze with a drink in my hand, thinking I can’t complain about anything. What I will be doing the next morning, I can’t quite say.
Restylish: 5. Can you multitask?
Jay Houston: Does making beats, writing, Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, text, and sipping all at the same time count? Then yes.
Restylish: 6. Have you ever lied in an interview?
Jay Houston: Today, no. Probably too honest today. I don’t think I ever have. I may have let Nino answer questions for me when I’m quiet, if that counts as lying in an interview. Ha.
Restylish: 7. What’s your favorite thing to do in morning?
Jay Houston: If I am determined enough, I will hit Starbucks super early for a black eye which is coffee with two espresso shots. Throw in my earbuds and listen to a song that would relate to the previous day’s events.
Restylish: 8. Is there an artist you want to work with that you have not yet had the opportunity to work with?
Jay Houston: It is very hard to pick one. I have favorite artists that I honestly dunno if I could fathom working with lol. But Kid Cudi always comes to mind when I think about it. He breaks boundaries and never limits himself. Brings his life into the music, and is comfortable with that.
Restylish: 9. If you were stranded on an island what are the three things that’d you’d take with you?
Jay Houston: A radio that picked up all the oldies radio stations, bottle of Jack Daniels and the best fishing pole available at Sports Authority.
Restylish: 10. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Jay Houston: Because he seen he was approaching a Chik-Fil-A. Bahleedat. 100.
Dj Been Ha Meen
@Pleasedontstare
Restylish: What does it take to get to the top of the tree?
Been Ha Meen: What defines the top?. If this is the top of the tree then it’s time to learn to fly. But the belief that I’ve always had that has gotten me this far is to love what you do. No matter what else you do in life your work should be something you love. If not then do something else, because life is too short and we spend too much of it working.
Restylish: Is this how you pictured your life would be 10 or 5 years ago?
Been Ha Meen: Not really, I kind of fell in love with djing randomly. I figured I would be in Hollywood making movies, and some of the things that have happened to me in the last ten years I wouldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams or worst nightmares. Two cliches in one sentence. On to the next one.
Been Ha Meen: Love is the ultimate unlimited resource. The only thing that matters in the end is how much love we put out into the world. We live in a society that’s driven by money and materials and no matter how much of it you have, I feel that what matters more is how much love you put into the world. Then again if I was a gazillionaire I might have a different opinion.
Been Ha Meen: My salvation. I couldn’t imagine what my life would be like without djing. It is my most serious addiction besides reading and breathing.
Been Ha Meen: Any day where I wake up.
Been Ha Meen: Depends on what age is considered a juvenile, and what would you call delinquent? If you mean did I ride shotgun racing down highways doing eighty-five shooting automatic paintball guns at my boys truck while spaced out on acid then yeah I might have been a bit out of control. Last week was awesome.
Been Ha Meen: Tough for me to answer that one, because the ladies tell me I have a beautiful smile but I think I look like I’m grimacing in pain every time I smile so what do I know?
Been Ha Meen: What song did Outkast put out in 1997? That and Adore, that’s my favorite song in any year.
Mike Red
@FiveTieCity
Restylish: What does it take to get to the top of the tree?
Mike Red: A building.
Restylish: Do you have a muse? if so, what is it?
Mike Red: I would never own a moose.
Restylish: If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?
Mike Red: Alaska.
Restylish: Music is?
Restylish: What inspires you?
Chabo: My Family and Friends inspire me alot. I have visions of making them the happiest people on earth, and that drives me all the time to keep going.
Restylish: What does it take to get to the top of the tree?
Chabo: Haha, Umm Bionic Monkey Skills haha. No but really A TEAM is what gets you to the top of the tree. i have yet to see anyone make it to the top alone. Unless your a monkey, like me.
Restylish: Music….?
Chabo: It’s the gift that keeps on giving. Was that Cliche enough? As far as my music , I love the music I make and the people that hear me for the first time feel like they know the fun loving me, through my music, and thats cool.
Restylish: Do you have a muse?
Chabo: My Muse is really weird, I watch documentaries on artist who are on tour, and the fun they have while they are on tour, the parties they attend, and ofcourse the fans they meet are all head over heels for them. I feel like im in their shoes, and the excitement from that brings out the energy to make my music. Its my high..am I allowed to say that?
Restylish: Do you listen to your own music?
Chabo: From time to time, I like to listen to other genres of music, like indie or early 90′s party music. With my music I have tracks that I’ve made from when I was 14 or 15 that I listen to from time to time.
Restylish: Have you ever lied in an interview?
Chabo: Liar Liar pants on FIRE! Yeah I lied on this one about me being a monkey.
Restylish: What’s your favorite thing to do in morning?
Chabo: Wake up, and reading this sign I have on my wall that says “When its all said and done, More is always said than done.” It reminds me to not talk about it be about it shawty! Hahaha.
Restylish: What do you think of photography?
Chabo: Its dope, I bought my own camera so when we hit the road I could snap everything that goes on. Like the HANGOVER haha think its a game but im dead serious we forget everything.
Restylish: Why would you consider your favorite athelete a role model?
Chabo: Ahh man this is where the critics choose to like me or not. The whole Kobe, Lebron, Jordan, Magic conversation. All the guys are Great but the one athelete I see as a role model is Carmelo Anthony thats my nigg*. His name is his character MELO and thats cool.
Restylish: Why are you answering these questions?
Chabo: Let me tell you something, Kobe Bryant 80 points, Lebron James Double Double. Let me tell you something, Michael Jordan Greatest Player. Swag Whoop! hahaha
